FIND YOUR FIT

Sofla vs Spotlight.

Compare Sofla’s full-screen app grid with the built-in Spotlight experience. See which fits visual browsing, app organization, and keyboard launching.

The practical difference

Choose Sofla for an app grid you arrange. Start with Spotlight if the built-in experience already does what you need. You can use both, assigning a different shortcut to Sofla.

Spotlight can already browse and open applications. The choice is not whether a Mac can launch apps without extra software. It is whether you want a dedicated full-screen layout, folders you organize, and an independently arranged Favorites collection.

This comparison is published by Sofla and covers app-launching workflows. See download availability; the browser preview is available to try.

When Sofla fits

You may want Sofla when you remember where an icon sits, prefer a larger visual overview, or want to group apps by the work you do. A “Writing” folder and a small Favorites collection can serve different purposes without moving the same apps back and forth.

Sofla’s search is deliberately about applications. Its native implementation does not depend on Spotlight’s index to discover them. That is a design difference, not a promise that it fixes every missing-app problem. Hidden apps and search locations still matter; see finding missing apps in Sofla.

The app also lets you choose the opening shortcut and adjust the grid. Those choices are useful when a default arrangement does not fit your screen or habits.

When keeping Spotlight makes sense

If you can already type an app’s name and open it comfortably, try the built-in option before adding another launcher. It needs no separate Sofla release or setup.

You also do not have to replace a working search habit to use a visual grid occasionally. Keep Spotlight for its existing role and open Sofla when you want to browse or organize apps.

Test the difference yourself

Try the same task in both experiences: find Calendar, change the selected result with the keyboard, and open an app whose name you only partly remember. In Sofla’s interactive preview, launches are simulated so you can explore without changing your computer.

If what you miss is the older full-screen grid, read about the Launchpad-style experience. If you are comparing command launchers too, see Sofla vs Raycast and Sofla vs Alfred.
